The Darkness Game

Yeah, so I viewed the gameplay footage, saw it get hyped, read the review and bought it for the XBOX 360. Although The Darkness is pretty cool and I finished it in two non-stop 6 hour sessions, there’s a lot going on (or rather not going on) that makes me refrain from being too positive when people ask me about the game.

The DarknessFirst of all Jackie Estacado, the protagonist, has the worst lip movement while other characters in the game prove that it can be done properly. With the quite excellent voice acting it’s a bit disturbing to see the main character mumble his words as if his face went numb.

What also bothered me is how dumb your opponents are. They got me pretty good at the cemetery at the start of the game as they ganged up on me, but from there they just get dumber and dumber. All they seemed to do was fire their guns if they stared straight at me or just stand around being cannon fodder. This is probably the most disappointing aspect of this game and I feel that the gunfights could have been far more enjoyable.

I also didn’t get much satisfaction from the Darklings. Maybe it was me, but they didn’t seem to do much, other than getting vaporised by wandering into the light or drawing some of the gunfire to themselves. Especially the lightkiller darkling that is supposed to take out the lights around you could have been an asset if it actually did that. Lastly if they were being funny and did things to entertain me, I must have missed them.

Don’t get me wrong, this game is alright. There is however far to much bad stuff going on and the game is too short to even remotely compete with the real gems like Lost Planet and of course Gears of War.
