I thought I would share some of my favorites when it comes to what I listen to, watch and use. Maybe you’ll find something new and at the very least it tells you a bit more about my personal taste.
Music: The Killers
It was a The O.C. episode that first introduced me to The Killers and their album Hot Fuss is brilliant. It’s a style that isn’t fit for everyone and I noticed that even more while listening to their newer album Sam’s Town. Although it has many songs that don’t really do it for me, it also features some absolute gems like When You Were Young and This River Is Wild.
Music: Regina Spektor
I have mixed feelings about Regina Spektor. The first song I came across was On The Radio and I liked the energy and lyrics. Later Fidelity hit MTV which appealed to me as well. However, when I previewed some of the tracks on her albums most of them didn’t really do it for me. Still she has a few very nice songs in my opinion, such as Samson, Hotel song, Buildings, Us, Better and the two I mentioned earlier.
Movie: Lost in Translation (2003)
The first time I saw this movie directed by Sofia Coppola was on a slow Sunday afternoon. I really loved the rhythm of the movie and how it developed itself as an experience rather than an adventure. Besides being a Bill Murray fan this is also the type of movie that I can appreciate, even though a lot of people do not seem to share that. Does Steve Zissou ring a bell? I love that stuff.
Web Sevice: Last.fm
I’ve ranted about this before, but Last.fm’s radio player completely replaced regular and even web radio stations for me. It took a while for Last.fm to learn my taste of music, but now that it has I can listen to music known and unknown to me without having to listen to genres I just don’t care for. What also makes me love Last.fm even more is the fact that it is compatible with Xbox Media Center, which I use to play music in my living room.
Miniseries: Band of Brothers
The HBO miniseries is being aired again here in the Netherlands and I couldn’t help myself watching it again religiously. Although my love for the the World War 2 genre primarily focuses itself on computer games, this series along with the earlier released Saving Private Ryan keep me glued to the screen. There’s something about the time and setting that fascinates me more then other wars that have spun off movies and series.
Music: Room Eleven
A recently signed Dutch band whose songs are spring in audio form. The music is jazzy, positive and has an unrestricted, sometimes dreamy atmosphere. The singer is actually from my home town and was a year below me in high school. Not something I listen to a lot, but it’s perfect for those sunny afternoons when you’re trying to get things done.
Open Source: Wordpress
Oh yes, Wordpress. This site is powered by it, I’ve been using it a for quite a while and it has always served me well. It has an active developer community that’s actually active and it lives up to what you would expect of customizability and extensibility. The latter two are implemented to such an extend that it makes a great tool to rapidly build sites on remotely fit the Wordpress format.
TV Series: Battlestar Galactica
I’ve watched a lot of Star Trek, but since Voyager I have lost interest. I’m happy that Battlestar Galactica came along to fill the sci-fi series void. One thing I love about the series are the space scenes, combat especially. They’ve managed to capture it quite spectacularly. That, and watching Grace Park in her pilot suit just makes me happy.
Music: The Postal Service
The Last.fm radio player once served me a Postal Service song and since then it is a vital part of my music collection. Indietronica is not really a genre that I often appreciate, but Postal Service’s blend is great. Their songs range from hard, distorted beats to slower, tingling tunes. Definitely something you should check out to see if it appeals to you because if it does you’ll want it in your collection.
TV Series: Grey’s Anatomy
What can I say, I am a sucker for the drama/comedy genre. Quite unexpectedly the series has been able to entertain me for nearly three seasons. Maybe I also have a bit of an affection with the medical world, I often find myself watching the E.R. documentaries late at night when nothing else is on. Occasionally the writers take it a bit far, but you just know that once that’s done they’ll reference to it lightly and move on with more uncomfortable and funny plots.
So, there we are. The above is what I really find myself stick to at this moment in time. It’s a rather big list, but I’ll be posting more additions to it in the future. Maybe I’ll list some of my favorite anime series next. Now that you know a bit more about my (rather broad) taste, I’d love to hear any recommendations you might have.
