Hey Google, looking good

I never thought I would say this and deep down inside I rather admired Google for sticking with their search page layout (and they still do).

For some time now you are able to click Personalize this page at the top right corner of the screen. As the label implies, this is where you modify Google to your liking. So far we were able to add little widgets in columns that would display feeds, news, something or other of the day, the weather, your gmail inbox, etc. The one thing you couldn’t touch, the things that many of us love to customize the most, was its style.

Google ThemesNow you can. A new link appeared on the Google personalized homepage next to “Add Stuff”, called “Select Theme”. To my surprise there is a choice of 6 new themes. Most of them look really good with soothing interface colors and a nice big illustration as a backdrop for the search form.

They also function as infographics. Once you enter your city and zip code they will reflect your local time of day, weather or season.

Although I hardly ever use the personalized homepage, or the regular home page for that matter, it does me great pleasure to see the Google logo and search form tweaked to blend in with their wonderful backdrops.
